Dr. Bobby Hoffman is not only a columnist at Psychology Today, is an educator and researcher with specific interests in the antecedents of motivation and beliefs. His primary research focus is in cognitive and motivational efficiency.  This program of research focuses upon what factors contribute to optimal thinking and how individuals process complex information.  Dr. Hoffman has published numerous research studies which indicate that factors such as self-efficacy and engagement can compensate for limitations caused by working memory and state anxiety. His recent presentations to the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) include the Influence of Self-efficacy and Working Memory on Problem-solving Efficiency, The Effect of Single-Sex Instruction in a Large, Urban, At-Risk High School and Motivational Engagement in Video Games: A Mixed Methods Study.  Bob’s reputation in the field of educational psychology is due in part to his major theoretical contribution; Conceptions of efficiency: Applications in learning and problem solving which was recently published in the leading journal, Educational Psychologist.

Bob is a member of the editorial board of three leading journals; Contemporary Educational Psychology,Educational Psychology Review, and Educational Research, Technology & Development. He is a frequent reviewer for Educational Psychologist, The Asia-Pacific Education Review and several national educational research organizations.  In addition, he is co-creator and program coordinator for the growing Applied Learning & Instruction M.A. program founded in 2008.  A 2005 graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the 19th ranked Educational Psychology department in the nation, Bob has a PhD in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Learning & Technology. Bob’s teaching expertise includes Motivation in Learning & Performance, Human Intelligence, and Learning Theory & Assessment. Before joining UCF he taught graduate and undergraduate level courses in Learning & Development, Research Methods, Statistics, and Intro to Psychology at both UNLV and Nevada State College. In addition to his PhD, Bob holds a MA degree in Human Resources Psychology, and a BA in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Prior to a career in educational psychology, Bob was an entrepreneur owning his own Human Resources consulting firm for over 10 years. Before self-employment he worked in a variety of corporate and field Human Resources (HR) positions. During his tenure as an HR consultant he published over thirty articles on topics of organizational development and effectiveness. The Society of Human Resources Management has recognized Bob as instrumental in the advancement of the HR profession for his research and publications in the area of 360-degree feedback, a management tool designed to enhance individual performance and goal attainment.
